How to understand your BMI result

BMI compares weight with height. Standard adult categories use below 18.5, 18.5–24.9, 25–29.9 and 30 or higher as broad screening bands.

BMI has limits. It does not distinguish muscle from fat or account fully for age, ethnicity, pregnancy or body composition. It cannot diagnose a health condition. Read what BMI can—and cannot—tell you.
